Logos, Ethos, and Pathos

Logos

This is an Axe advertisement that uses logos. Advertisements always look for a target market. But what is a target market? It is who the product is for based on age, genre, and socio economic class. The target market for this particular advertisement, are men between the ages of 15-30 of a good socio economic class. But what does this have to do with the technique used in the advertisement? Well, logos is a technique used for the viewers reasoning. Based on the target market (men) when they see this advertisement their natural thoughts could be "If I use axe I will get girls". That is not necessarily true but it will be the effect that the advertisement will bring and what the technique logos is looking for.

                                               Ethos
In our tastes in music, movies, and TV shows we all have our favorite singers, actors, and actress. This is something the advertisement technique ethos loves to use. Don’t drink any water; drink the water that Jennifer Anniston drinks. In reality is the same water as any other water, but we all know her and if she drinks it, why not give it a try. Ethos looks for people we know and people we admire to think, "Well she is one of my favorite actresses, I will use the same products as she does". It could be a singer, actor, actress, or even a cartoon character but what is important is we all know them and we admire them, so we would use the same products that they use.

                                                                      Pathos

"In town, car accidents don't just happen to cars". When we see this picture and read this quote we feel both fear and pain. We see the pain the little girl's eyes, and feel fear of that happening to us. That is exactly what the technique Pathos is looking for (generating some type of emotion in the viewer.)

Malala Yousafzai

Sometimes we worry about not having a shirt, wanting to buy some jeans, many different insignificant things that don't affect our lifes. But if we look beyond our country and the small bubble we live in we can find that there are so many people our there that really have to suffer in life.  As I read two articles based on a girl called Malala Yousafzi, I realized that my life is really perfect ccompared to hers. She is a girl that wants to learn and wants to study. She wants to have a future as a doctor and she knows that the only way to get there is to study hard. But hte Talibans took over her country and city in 2007 and closed all her schools. In a rebelious act she started to write a blogg just like this one in which she expressed the things she felt towards the situation her country, and city were living in. A few years after she started writing the blogg, on her way home from school she was shot in the head and in the neck by the talibans.

When I read this I thought I was fourteen too a month ago. I know what is like to be a teenager and as the years pass and I turn more into one I realize that it is very hard for a teenager to express what they feel with words. They rather express it through their music, hobbies, and activities in school. But Malala was an exception. She expressed what she felt and showed it of to the world. She wasn't afraid of showing the cruel reality of her life and of her world. And because of that she got attacked.

It is very sad this happened to Malala. She is a very courageous girl with a very big heart.

The Sheep

As I read through this chapter I could connected a little with my own life. Last year I moved to Minnesota and nevered imagined I would make so many friends and leave some of my best friends there. When I read this chapter I wondered if any of my friends felt like the main character in this book when her friend left to the United states.
Apart from that part I thought this was a very unexpected chapter. It has both sadness and happiness, but mostly sadness.
I felt really sad when her uncle was arrested and killed, because loosing someone you love is really hard especially when they are really attached to you.

Persepolis

As I read throught this chapter I had some questions about it.

1:Why was her grandpa in prison?

2:How many years was her grandfather in prison?

3:How does the main character feel about her grandfather being in prison? Ashamed or proud?

4:What did the goverment think and feel towards the Martyrs?

5:How much attention did people get by crying and screaming for the Martyrs?

6:What did the widow think about her husband being a Martyr after he had actually died of cancer?

The Veil

As I read through this chapter, I thoughts that some words were very important to the text because they explained and demonstrated what the author was feeling, and what she was trying to say.

Veil: I thought this word was important beacuse it showed why the author felt the way she was feeling, and what was her reaction.

Revolution: This word tells why the story is taking place. Why people don't agree with their goverment, and how the girl in this book is impacted by this word.

Obligatory: I think this word is important in this chapter, because it shows/ explains how people are force to do something. In this case girls were forced to wear their veils.

Decadence: a decadence is the act or process of falling into an inferior condition or state. This describes the reason for the revolution the main character is halving to face.

Prophet: a prophet is a person who speaks for God or a deity, or by divine inspiration. This has relevance with the other words mentioned before. But in a different way. All of the words above were things and problems the main character had to face. But this word is what she wanted to be.

Gilgamesh Tablet XI

As I read through tablet XI I had many surprices. I realized that although Gilgamesh was writen before the Bible the story of Utnapishtim is very similiar to the story of Noah's Ark. If we compare and contrast these two stories we can see that they are quite similar in several aspects. Ea the cleverest of all the Gods tells Utnapishtim that there will be a flood and that he mut save all living things from drawning. To do this he must built a boat in which he will reamain for six days and six nights. On the seventh day Utnapihshtim sends several birds to look for land. Same happens with Noah. God sends a messanger to tell Noah that their will be a flood and that he must save all animals and his family from this flood. To do this he must do the same as Utnapishtim, he must built a boat. In the bible they use a different word: and ark but it is technically a boat. Noah is in the boat for six days and six nights. On the seventh days he sends a bird to search for land.
Although these two stories are not exatly the same, they can be connected very easily. I was very surpriced by this because even though both Gilgamesh and the Bible are writen around the same time, one has nothing to do with the other. But looking closely into them they do.

What Happens When We Die?

What Happens when we die? If we ask this question to ourselves we will never have a concrete answer because we will never actually know until we die. We all have different points of view and different ways of describing death but for me death is something we all have to face. Some people believe in rencarnation, others don't even care what happens when we die. In my opinion there is an after life and God will guide us through it when we die. The doors of heaven will be opened for us and we will have a new journey and a new start. I don't really know how my life will be after I die but all I know is that is something I will have to face when the right time for my death comes.

Gilgamesh reading blog table 6-7

As I read the tables six and seven I had a couple of questions.

Why do Gilgamesh and Ekidu think that the other is going to die???

Why does Gilgamesh always have dreams and Ekidu always say that they are fortunate???

What is the real meaning of Gilgamesh's dreams??

Why did Gilgamesh changed during his journey??

Gilgamesh reading blog table 4-5

What I courage and who has it? I have been asking this question to myself a couple of months now and the best response I could find to it is: We all have courage because we have fears and pains. What gives us courage is that we keep fighting them. We all have hard times and hard moments in our lives, but that is what shape us and makes us become stronger. As I read this two tables in the book I realize that when we have a friend or someone we really love next to us in a hard moment it is easier for us to confront it. I have been learning this, through all the bad times in my life. Because I always have my friends and family that support me and help me go through them. When Gilgamesh is tempted by Huwawa I remembered all the times we are temped to do things we dont want to or maybe we do but we know that they are not right. But what Ekidu demostrates is that there is always someone that is there to help us and advise us.

Gilgamesh reading blog table 1-3

As I read the first three tables in this book, I learned that Gilgamesh is a character that is full of pride. He is always thinking that he is the strongest and most powerful man in the world. He is a little more secure of himself than what he should actually be. As I realized this I remembered the book "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austin. If you have read the book you probably don't see quite a conection right away. But if you look deep into the characters, Elizabeth Bennet, one of the main characters in this book is very similar to Gilgamesh. Even though she tries to hide her pride in this book, she is always thinking that she is smarter than all of her sisters. She also judges people and thinks she is better than every one else. You can't really see this once you start reading the book, but once you get towards the middle of the book and the character Mr. Darcy comes to life, Elizabeth cannot hide her pride when he is around. Same happens in Gilgamesh he doesnt really show his pride until Ekidu comes to life in this book and he cannot hide it from him.

Friendship

What I want to infer with this pictures is:
1: Friendship can come in many different ways
2:Our friends are here to support us and help us, in the bad times and in the good times
3: No matter our size, shape or color we are all equal and we can all be friends
